Dr. Loren Schechter, MD is one of the country's foremost experts on gender-affirming surgery. He is the Medical Director of the Gender Affirmation Surgery Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Schechter's outstanding surgical skills and more than 20 years experience with transgender surgery have made him an in-demand surgeon. He is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, as well as several other respected surgical societies.
Dr. Schechter specializes in microsurgical Phalloplasty procedures, specifically Radial Forearm Flap (RFF) and Anterolateral Thigh (ALT). He also offers MLD Phalloplasty, which uses tissue from a back muscle.
Associated procedures such as Hysterectomy and Vaginectomy (performed with Gynecologist), Scrotoplasty with Testicular Implants (with or without tissue expanders), Urethroplasty and Glansplasty are also offered.
Penile Implant surgery, performed with a Urologist, is also available. For the implant, 2- and 3-piece inflatable penile implants are used.
While Dr. Schechter would prefer that patients have a BMI of less than 35, he does not have a strict limit.

Steps to Getting a Phalloplasty Surgery Date
Your free initial consultation with Dr. Schechter can be done by phone. An in-person consultation is required before proceeding with surgery.
Wait time for surgery dates is typically within 2-3 months of your consult.
If you're traveling from out of town to for your surgery, be sure to ask Dr. Schechter's staff about reduced pricing for area hotels as well as ground transportation from your hotel to hospital and/or office.
Financing and Insurance
Dr. Schechter accepts CareCredit, Medicare and insurance for Phalloplasty. He has an insurance specialist on his team who can assist you with obtaining pre-cert/pre-determination.
Surgery Requirements
Dr. Schechter is a member of WPATH and follows surgery guidelines in the Standards of Care. You will require medical evaluation by your primary MD or MD providing hormones and a letter of recommendation from a psychologist or other mental health professional.
